A boy aged just two survived a fall from the 15th floor of a residential building in Montgomery County, Maryland. According to local police spokeswoman Shiera Goff, the child fell from the balcony of an apartment protected by glass, not a conventional railing.
Family members were in the home at the time of the incident. The seriously injured boy was taken to hospital by one of his parents after suffering injuries described as traumatic, according to the county's emergency services.
It was the natural elements at the foot of the building that seem to have played a crucial role. "The child landed in bushes and mulch, which softened the impact," David Pazos, deputy chief of the fire department, told ABC News, referring to a real "miracle".
For the police spokeswoman, several factors contributed to this unexpected outcome: "His age, height and weight were decisive. Had he been heavier, he might not have survived," she said. "It was a combination of the presence of these bushes, these shrubs, and his physical characteristics," she added.
The child's current state of health has not been released. An investigation is underway to determine exactly what happened. The authorities are continuing their investigations.
